South Africa’s iconic 5-day Whale Trail hiking route is offered as a challenge to trail runners who are capable of embracing all 53km and 1900m of elevation, covering spectacular mountain fynbos, technical rocky ridgelines, sandy beach stretches and endless, beautiful vistas in one day. The event is the only opportunity each year for a limited number of nature-loving athletes to run on this trail. The route takes runners on a journey from the base of the Potberg mountain to the beach at Koppie Alleen in CapeNature’s flagship De Hoop Nature Reserve. If the ultra distance seems too daunting, there’s also a 35km route that starts and ends in the same glorious places, with a well-designed cut-through that still gives runners a taste of everything that the area has to offer. Nuun is the official event hydration partner – Nuun products are available from Dis-Chem. Visit whaleoftrail.co.za for more info.
