After five action-packed years of racing, the organisers of the Western Cape’s popular open water swim, the Cape Mile, have announced that the event will not continue in 2020.
While for the past five years the Cape Mile enjoyed year-on-year growth in entries and attracted a strong field of elite local swimmers with the attractive prize purse, the withdrawal by the event’s title sponsor means hosting an event of this magnitude is unsustainable.
“These offerings (and more) were made possible through the valued sponsorship of Sanlam, the title sponsor of the Cape Mile since its inception in 2015,” explains Michael Meyer, Managing Director Stillwater Sports.
“After five memorable years, Sanlam has announced that the group will not be renewing its sponsorship agreement with the Cape Mile in 2020.”
Rather than compromising its reputation, Meyer and his team decided that the Cape Mile will not continue in 2020, making 2019 event, which took place on Sunday, 17 February 2019, its swansong.
“Although saddened by the decision, we are thankful to Sanlam for their valued support over the last five years. We are also thankful to each and every swimmer for their contributions.”
