After President Cyril Ramaphosa flexed his lockdown muscle and closed gyms for 2 weeks amid the third Covid-19 infection wave, gym members received good news during the presidential address on Sunday night.

Under updated adjusted level 4 regulations, gyms can reopen from Monday, 12 July 2021 under strict Covid protocols.

These include limited capacity and adjusted operating hours to comply with the level 4 curfew restrictions.

Updated operating hours

Planet Fitness announced updated operating times following President Ramaphosa’s address. Gyms can now welcome members back to clubs under updated level 4 operating hour restrictions, which include 05:00-20:00 from Monday to Friday, 07:00-18h00 on Saturdays and public holidays, and 07:00-16:00 on Sundays (club times may vary).

Limited capacity

However, gyms and fitness centres are limited to 50 members at a time or only 50% of the venue’s capacity for smaller facilities. Venues must ensure that members maintain a minimum distance of 1.5m between each other.

Contact your gym to check capacity before heading out to avoid getting denied access at the door.
