Planet Fitness has given the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC) and the South African Olympic and Paralympic teams a major boost with a R15-million investment for team fitness and high-performance training.
Over 260 Team South Africa (SA) athletes will gain access to 47 Planet Fitness clubs across the country as part of the 4-year deal.
This will broaden access to world-class facilities close to where athletes live amid the COVID-19 restrictions and will help to save costs associated with transporting athletes to one of the high-performance centres in Gauteng.
A helping hand
“We are doing this in the spirit of unity in a very tough environment for South Africa’s finest athletes,” commented Mannee de Wet, MD of Planet Fitness, the country’s largest homegrown South African gym company.
The initiative aims to support Team SA athletes to improve their performance and physical development in the hunt for Olympic medals at the Tokyo Olympic and Paralympics.
The deal will continue to support their efforts through both the 2022 Commonwealth Games and the Paris Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2024.
Producing sporting champions
SASCOC President Barry Hendricks expressed his gratitude and excitement on the new sponsorship by a South African brand.
“We are delighted to welcome on board the strength and national footprint of Planet Fitness and Fit SA’s commitment to Team SA, the Olympic, the Paralympic Movement, the Commonwealth Games Movement and sports federations in South Africa as a whole. Without partnerships like these, our task of producing sporting champions would be much harder.”
The gym access applies to athletes and members who belong to all affiliated National Sporting Federations that fall under SASCOC.
