The 2019 XTERRA South Africa event, which takes place at the Elgin Grabouw Country Club on 23 and 24 February, offers an exciting “team category” that allows swimmers, mountain bikers and trail runners to team up and experience the action of the largest XTERRA event in the world.
XTERRA Grabouw has become an annual event for friends Tommie Kruger (Grabouw), Ryal de Waal (Stellenbosch) and Francois Groenewald (Grabouw), with each athlete completing one leg of this premium off-road triathlon.
Kruger (59), boasts an impressive track record in the over 50 open water swim category, will start the race with the 1.5km swim. He will hand the ‘baton’ over to Ryal de Waal (53) who will take on the +-25.6km MTB leg. Groenewald (32) will take on the final leg of XTERRA, which comprises a +-12.4km trail run. The team’s goal is to finish in the top 10 overall and podium in the team category.
According to the teammates, entering as part of a team adds an element of excitement to the race, while sharing the experience with friends just makes it extra special.
